Social Media Banned from SEC Stadiums

Reported by Logan Leger on Mon, Aug 17th, 2009 in Sports and tagged: , , ,

Mashable reports that the final version of the SEC’s new media policty is expected to be released today. LSU is a member of the South Eastern Conference and therefore subject to any of its official policies. Earlier this month the SEC informed its members of a temporary policy that prohibits any ticketed fans from producing or disseminating any material about the event. This effectively includes all social media, including Facebook and Twitter.

If this were in any way similar to the final version, it would be a very sad day for LSU fans. Creating social media has become integrated into our everyday lives, and being in Tiger Stadium is certainly something that we want to share. Like last year during the Alabama game, I was tweeting and posting pictures during that heart-wrenching, seat-gripping game. I just can’t imagine that this policy would be the final version or if it is that it will be enforceable.

I’ll keep my eye on this and update when we receive the final version.

How the hell would they enforce such insanity? I don’t twitter but I dso text friends throughout the game, sometimes people at ther other end of the stadium. What are they going to do next, have thought police running through the stadium looking for people who might cause trouble. Next step: confiscate all cell phones at the gates. They have effectively priced ordinary fans out of the market in favor or corporate pirates who cut bidnez deals in their suites and don’t give a damn about what’s happening on the field. What’s going to happen when the ordinary fans who parent the recruits decide that LSU only cares about the buck. Of course, that’s true throughout collegiate sports today so I guess I’m just letting a little vent go. I sit with a friend (his tix) in the South End Zone or on the sidelines with a Senator friend. Have been in the suites and I can tell you they are not good for the screaming type of maniac I become when the band takes the field and plays “Hold that Tiger.”

I agree: this policy is basically unenforceable, and worse, it’s counter-productive. Social media is a great method of free advertising. I fail to see why or how this helps achieve any agenda.
