Logan’s Latest Project

Reported by Logan Leger on Sun, Jun 28th, 2009 — begin the discussion

Hey guys, I just wanted to share with you a little project that I’ve been working on. In no way is this at all related to anything remotely about Baton Rouge, but I know a lot of you are also hardcore Twitter users like myself (@lleger, btw), so I wanted to do some shamless self-promotion here. It’s a simple test to see if you’re addicted to twitter. Check it out and let me know what you think.

Introducing Newstwit

Reported by Logan Leger on Mon, Jun 15th, 2009 — begin the discussion

Recently, I’ve been involved in a new web application called Newstwit. It’s an experimental news aggregator powered by Twitter. I’ve been working closely with Charlie Davis of Baton Rouge-based Liquid Ventures to develop this application over the past several weeks. And after many sleepless nights and countless milligrams of caffeine, I’m excited to introduce it to you. I’m really proud of what we’ve built and excited about the future of the product.

The Baton Rouge Business Report covered us today in their daily report:

Baton Rouge company simplifies news on Twitter
Baton Rouge-based new media company Liquid Ventures has launched a real-time news aggregator today. Newstwit.net utilizes Twitter feeds to pull news stories, commentary and user content into category feeds. Newstwit.net functions much like a news Web site, allowing users to select the type of news content they view, including sports, technology, science and local or regional channels. The aggregator’s Louisiana feed pulls together Twitter news updates from Gov. Bobby Jindal, several Louisiana politicians, Business Report Executive Editor JR Ball, Nola.com, WAFB-TV and numerous other state and local users. Charlie Davis, Newstwit.net’s founder, says the site will eventually let users sort Twitter feeds by sports teams and leagues. “The possibilities are endless,” he says.—Olivia Watkins

We’re just launching locally today, but nationally in the coming days. So, I ask that you help us out by going to the site, browsing around and dropping me a comment if you notice anything or just generally have any comments or suggestions. Thanks!

You can view the site here or view our Louisiana page here.

@aplusk Billboards in Baton Rouge

Reported by Logan Leger on Fri, Apr 17th, 2009 — 2 comments

If you haven’t heard about the Ashton Kutcher vs CNN Twitter follow challenge by now, then it’s highly likely that you’ve been living under a rock. It’s been on literally every news venue (except, of course, this one—until now) since Kutcher first made the promise of ding-dong ditching CNN-founder and media visionary Ted Turner’s house a week ago. Last night, Kutcher finally broke 1 million. Despite what this means to social media and Twitter (*insert polemic here), last night during the race we received word of mysterious “Follow Ashton Kutcher” billboards going up around the city. From what we can tell, this also happened elsewhere around the country. Lamar Digital, the subsidiary of Lamar Advertising that manages their electronic billboards, said they put them up of their own accord. You can see on their Twitter stream how they were reaching out to help: “@aplusk Hey man we got your back! 1100 Billboards nationwide that can reach over 36 million people. Hope it helps!” That’s a really impressive statistic. In their stream are pics of the billboards across the country. Below are two links to the ones in Baton Rouge. Enjoy.

(*Polemic starts now: Which, by the way, this whole thing really has nothing to do with Kutcher. It’s cool that it happened to him and that he was the first and is donating things to charity and whatnot, but honestly, I wouldn’t have picked him. Listening to him stream live last night after he broke it made it extremely apparent that he really has no idea what’s going on and why this revolution is important. Listen to him: he’s saying the same thing over and over again and, at that, he’s just speaking in platitudes. I’m excited about what this means for the future of social media, but, again, this has nothing to do with Kutcher. I just think that needs to be made painfully obvious, because people don’t seem to realize that. Oh, and I also think it’s ridiculous that his 1 millionth follower was someone who joined Twitter last night and—wait for it—hasn’t even posted a tweet yet! This thing has gotten out of hand.) [Disclaimer: This, of course, is my own opinion and doesn't reflect any official stance of @btrblog. This is @lleger's words only.]

What’s Your Favorite Baton Rouge Radio Station?

Reported by Logan Leger on Wed, Apr 08th, 2009 — one comment

We’re conducting a survey to determine the most popular radio station in Baton Rouge. To vote, simply send a Tweet with the four-letter call sign (e.g. WABC or KABC) appended with the hastag #btrblog (e.g. “WABC #btrblog”). You can also submit a comment here. Alternatively, just send us an email at the tip line.

We’ll compile the results at the end of the week and publish the results. This isn’t for anything in particular; we’re just really curious.
